Tour overview

Why you should choose the Complete Sarajevo Jewish tour?

‘’When I became a tour guide, I realized that every day there’s so much to learn about this country. Some of the topics were boring, like the political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Some of them were interesting, like the history of Austro-Hungarian time in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

But, learning about Jewish history in Sarajevo was AMAZING. It’s packed with all kinds of interesting stories through which you can see why Sarajevo is truly EUROPEAN JERUSALEM. I read every page with a smile and every discovery about the Jewish heritage was mind-blowing to me. That’s why I dedicated my time to become the best Jewish History tour guide in Sarajevo.

Although there is still a lot to learn, we wish to share with you our knowledge about the most interesting Jewish History on our Complete Sarajevo Jewish Tour.’’

– Almedin Memović (Tallest Tourguide)

The tour will start in front of our agency from where we’ll head to the Jewish Museum, originally called the Synagogue Old Temple.

You’ll listen to stories about the arrival of Jews in Sarajevo, see their first neighbourhoods, find out about the culture of Sephardic Jews and listen about the early interests of Jews in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sarajevo.

We’ll speak about the Holocaust during the period of World War II. We will mention the righteous among the nations that are coming from Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We’ll explain in details the difficult history behind and, without taking any sides, we’ll state the facts about the killings of Jews in WWII.

During our talk about WWII, we’ll recreate the story about the Sarajevo Haggadah. This will leave you with a huge smile that you’ll carry around until the end of the tour. You need to believe us on this one 🙂

Afterwards, we’ll stroll through the city. We will show you the most important objects built mostly by Jews in Sarajevo. We’ll also visit the remains of the Grand Temple, 3rd largest Jewish Synagogue in Europe.

Next we’ll head towards the Jewish Cemetery where you’ll have the chance to see the largest Sephardic Cemetery in Europe and the second largest Jewish Cemetery in Europe.

In the end, we’ll pay a visit to the Ashkenazi Synagogue. Here you’ll get a summary of the whole tour and you’ll be able to see a part of small Jewish community in there centre.

The tour will take place in the heart of the Old Town and Center of the City. Locations that you will visit are listed below.

Synagogue Old Temple is right now the only Jewish Museum in Sarajevo.

Old Temple Synagogue / Jewish Museum

Old Temple Synagogue was built in the 16th century and it is the first synagogue in the city of Sarajevo. You will learn about the arrival of Jews and about the Sarajevo Haggadah.

Tour group taking a picture at Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures spot
Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures is one of the locations that we will visit in Ferhadija street.

Ferhadija Street

In this street you’ll be able to see the remaining buildings constructed and owned by Jewish people. We’ll visit the Solomon Palace and give you more insight into the life and status of Jews before the WWII

Interior of the Old Temple Synagogue in Sarajevo
Before we go to Kal Grande we will do introduction about the holocaust in the Jewish Museum.

Kal Grande / Grand Temple Synagogue

The 3rd largest Jewish Synagogue in Europe with a second largest dome from all of the Synagogues in Europe is today the Bosnian Culture Centre (BKC). We will visit a small shop owned by a Jewish organisation named Haggadah where you can, if you wish, buy some souvenirs as a memory from our tour.

Gravestones on the Jewish grave
Second biggest Jewish cemetery in Europe is location on which is tombstone of Zeki Efendi.

Jewish Cemetery

Definitely one of the most silent and most beautiful locations in Sarajevo with an amazing view. Jewish Cemetery is one of a kind in Europe due to the very interesting tombstones called Sleeping Lion. As we stated before in explanation of this tour, this is 2nd largest Jewish Cemetery in Europe.

Interior of Ashkenazi Synagogue in Sarajevo during Jewish the tour
The only active synagogue is Ashkenazi Synagogue in Sarajevo.

Ashkenazi Synagogue

Contrast between the Old Temple Synagogue and Ashkenazi Synagogue is immediately visible once you enter. This is the only active synagogue in Sarajevo with an active community center in the building that is connected with the Synagogue.

Really enjoyed the walking tour this morning. I've done quite a few in different cities but this one stands out really. Really interesting stories and facts on the city's history are being mixed with some personal stories and experiences. Also enjoyed doing this in a small group, we went and had a little coffee and lovely conversations; all felt really personal. Thank you. I'd definitely recommend! Keep up the good work more

Absolutely great tour. The tallest tourguide is not just tall but also extremely knowledgable about the history of Bosnia. When the tour ended, I felt overloaded with information in a good way, and Almedin took the time to sit and talk with me and help me digest the experience, not just of the tunnel tour - but also of being in Bosnia in general. He has my warmest recommendations!read more

Highly recommend the free Alternative Sarajevo tour if you're looking to see a different side of Sarajevo and find out about the Street Art. It's really hard to understand the street art as lots is in Bosnian or Bosnian slang or has references which aren't easy to get so it's great to have a local guide explain more
